2005 MEN’S DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED
Somewhat belatedly (due to the overseas absence of one of the players) the men’s doubles club championships were recently decided. Following an arduous round robin event held in October 2005, four players made their way to the final – Joe Moseley, Dave Lehman, Mark Manchur and Frank Wallner. The teams were drawn and the Springbok sympathisers were drawn against the Wallabies.

With Lehman suffering from fluid retention causing an unusual bloating around the midriff, Manchur and Wallner were tempted to take pity on their opponents. However, they quickly came to their senses realizing that their opponents had been sneaking in some secret training involving some kind of performance enhancing amber liquid. The Aussie duo stuck to their guns and took an exciting first set 6-3. In the second set the tables were turned with an outstanding display of fast reflexes and even faster legs from Moseley who ran down numerous topspin lobs for his less swift partner. Nevertheless, Lehman’s machine like forehand kept the ball going back relentlessly with the Aussie duo making more errors under the intense and sustained pressure. Moseley and Lehman ran out the second set 6-3.

Wallner was sure that the sugar high brought on by the copious quantities of Fanta and Lift consumed by the Springbok sympathizers had to end. But how wrong he was – with Manchur and Wallner finding themselves down 4-1 in the third set things looked bad. The sugar high did wear off with Lehman suffering shakes and blurred vision but the hole was too deep. Wallner and Manchur fought their way back to 5-4 but needed to break the frustrating, cacky handed, spin serve of Moseley which they were unable to do. A fascinating battle and although Club President and Tournament Director, Frank Wallner quickly attempted to amend the match to best of five sets (as Lehman had been unable to move to the net to shake hands) the final scoreline had to stand 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Congratulations to Joe Moseley and David Lehman worthy winners of the
