Kiama’s Ben and Matt scored a narrow win over Rail in the KSDTA junior tennis competition on Saturday.

Ben gave Kiama a great start with a 6-0 win in the opening singles set. Rail had no answer for Ben's accurate serving and powerful shots from the baseline.

Rail fought back to take the second singles set 6-4, then went on to outlast the Kiama boys 6-5 in an exciting double set, but Kiama’s superior games score saw them take the bonus points for the match.

In other boys matches on Saturday:

Oak Flats def Kiama 2, 34-25
This match was a close tussle all the way. Kiama's Glen and carl made a slow start, dropping the doubles 6-2. The singles sets were very close with the 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 5-6 scoreline telling the story of the Kiama boys threatening, but never being able to overcome the Flats side to regain the lead. Both sides will be looking forward to the return encounter.

Kiama 3 def Jamberoo, 33-20
Jamberoo found themselves holding a handy 8 game lead after winning the opening singles sets 6-4, 6-0. Kiama’s Kane and Jae showed great character to steady the ship and fight back to take the reverse singles 6-5, 6-2. Holding a one game lead going into the doubles, the Kiama boys kept the momentum rolling to take the decider 6-2 and claim the bonus points.

Kiama 7 def Oak Flats, 26-9
Kiama’s Jye and Bjorn kept the fans involved in the match with some entertaining tennis. Jye gave the Kiama side a narrow lead with a tough 6-4 win in the opening set. Bjorn increased the Kiama lead when he took the second singles set 6-2. The Kiama boys combined to win their doubles 6-3 to complete a straight sets win.

In girls matches on Saturday:

Oak Flats def Kiama 1, 40-11
Despite moments of brilliance, Kiama’s Sheridan and Kayla were unable to rein in a runaway Flats side. Flats set the tone when they took the opening set 6-1. Kayla lifted Kiama's spirits with an inspiring performance in the second set, but succumbed in the final game to go down 5-6. Bouyed by the previous set, Sheridan played some great shots, but saw the set slip away to a 3-6 loss. The Oak Flats girls powered through the last two sets 6-1, 6-1 to seal a well-deserved win.

Warilla def Kiama 3, 25-12
Brittani was unlucky to miss out on the points in the first set, going down 5-6 in the opener. Melissa did her best to swing the match in Kiama’s favour, but some accurate shot-making saw the Warilla side take the second set 6-3. The Kiama girls put in some great work from all parts of the court in the doubles, but couldn’t overcome the powerful play of the Warilla girls, dropping the final set 4-6.

Kiama 4 def Minnamurra, 23-9
Fans were treated to another entertaining match with lots of rallies and plenty of exciting points. Shari put Kiama on the board with a 6-3 win in the opening set. Nicole increased the Kiama lead, posting an effortless 6-1 win in the second singles. The Kiama girls had to lift their game to overcome a resurgent Minnamurra side 6-5 in the final doubles set.
