Junior tennis fans were treated to a thrilling match at the Blowhole courts on Saturday morning when Jamberoo edged out Kiama by the narrowest of margins in the Division 3 girls’ competition.

The opening set was a battle of accurate serving and strong ground strokes. Kiama’s Kate McCullough came from 0-2 down to square the set at 5-5, before Jamberoo’s Lauren Markham took the deciding game to put a Jamberoo win on the board.

After a nervous start in the second singles set, Kiama’s Jessica Robinson found her form and began blasting winners from all parts of the court to even the match with a 6-5 win.

Robinson continued her good form in the hot conditions to put Kiama in the lead with a convincing 6-2 win in the first reverse singles. However, the lead was short lived as Jamberoo’s Simone Ward put on a wonderful display of serving to win the second reverse singles 6-2.

After three hours of battle in the stifling conditions, with the match tied at 19-19, the girls took to the court for the deciding doubles set. Kiama took an early break to jump to a 2-0 lead, and held the lead until late in the set when the Jamberoo girls levelled at 5-5, then went on to serve out the set for a 6-5 win in the set, and a one game win in the match.

In other girls matches on Saturday:

Kiama 1 def Oak Flats 39 – 22
This was one of those matches that was closer than the final score suggests. Kiama’s Ann Lee won the opening set 6-3, putting away some unlikely winners with great running tennis. The second set could have gone either way, but a gritty performance by Kiama’s Kayla Peacock claimed the points for Kiama with a 6-4 win.

Kiama edged further into the lead with a narrow 6-4 win in the first reverse singles. The Flats girls signalled that they weren’t finished when they notched up a 6-5 win in the second reverse singles. However, the Kiama girls took a breather in the warm conditions then came out to put the result beyond doubt with a solid 6-3 win in the deciding doubles set.

Kiama 4 def Minnamurra, 23-8
Playing in their first competition, Kiama’s Nicole Terentis and Annabel Blackman have posted a good win in the Division 5 competition. The girls set up their win with great serving and consistent shot making from around the court.

As the on-court temperature rose, the Kiama girls’ game grew stronger. Blackman gave a Kiama a narrow early lead with a 6-5 win in the opening set. Terentis increased the team’s lead with a 6-3 win in the second set, before the girls combined to dominate the doubles, taking the final set 6-0.

Kiama 5 def Gerringong, 26-6
Kiama’s Meghan Myers and Rebecca Home, also playing their first Saturday competition, won their singles matches 6-3, 6-3. The Kiama girls were credited with a straight sets win when the Minnamurra girls were unable to field a team for the final doubles set.

Primary school players are reminded that the first social evening for the year will be held on Friday night with a Pizza ‘n’ Tennis night at the Kiama courts, from 6 – 8:30pm. Cost is $6 and all Primary school players are welcome to attend.
